In this blog post I will talk about one of my passions, the Education Sector in Malawi. My very first blog post in this “Lead Without Title” Series was about the subject of education. The post is titled “UNIMA Alumni … ‘IT’S ABOUT TIME!’” (https://obetha.wordpress.com/2011/02/17/lm0001-unima-alumni-its-about-time/) where I called to action the citizens of Malawi especially those that were privileged enough to be awarded the heavily subsidised scholarships which allowed them to attend tertiary education at the different constituent colleges of the University of Malawi (UNIMA). I am one of these citizens who was selected from secondary school to study Bachelor of Science (Computer Sciences) at Chancellor College (Chancoll) from 1989 to 1993. In the “UNIMA Alumni … ‘IT’S ABOUT TIME!’” blog, I wrote about the situation at my former college and in particular I highlighted the plight of the Computer Science Department where the last time I checked in 1999, I noted that there was a huge shortage of textbooks and reference material. I lamented about the fact that when I was a student at Chancoll, we had an abundance of text and reference material both at the departmental library and the college’s library but the last time I visited, the situation was not as rosy as it was during our years at the college. This picture has always been on my mind and has reinforced my quest to keep and preserve every book that I have ever owned or used.

As someone who has benefited from these scholarships that the Malawi government awarded to us by virtue of our selection to UNIMA, I have always made it a point to encourage my fellow alumni of UNIMA to always regard themselves as investments for Malawi’s future. Granted some are using their training to work in many sectors and businesses thereby implicitly developing Malawi, I believe that involvement in the advancement of University of Malawi and/or its constituent colleges should be at the top of the list of actions for every member of the alumni body. Our friends out there pride in sending their children and grandchildren to their former schools and colleges. One of the things that they do is active involvement in the development of their former institutions. Would we be proud or comfortable to send our descendants to our alma mater?

BACK TO THE BOOKS

Now let me go back to the books issue; that is textbooks and reference books. Less than two years after landing my first job after graduation (Reserve Bank of Malawi 1993-95), I left the job and left Malawi in 1995 for USA for my postgraduate studies. I studied and worked in the states of West Virginia, Texas and Maryland. My studies were a combination of universities, information technology certifications training institutions and private study. I left USA for the Motherland Africa in 2009 but during the whole time that I was away from the motherland, I made it a point to keep and preserve each and every book that I used in my studies and training. I noted that many students in the USA sold their books back to the library or to other people but I always kept mine because I knew that students at my alma mater Chancellor College’s Computer Science Department would one day benefit from the same books just like I did – as textbooks or reference material. When I relocated from USA to South Africa, I relocated with all these books. Final destination – Malawi.

MUTU UMODZI SIUZENZA DENGA (THERE IS POWER IN NUMBERS)

So here is my next call to action for friends of UNIMA, UNIMA Alumni, Chancellor College Alumni and all well-wishers out there. The books that I have mentioned above are still packed in boxes and sitting in my garage. … (See the attached photographs). I would like to call upon those interested that we work together to get these books to the desired destination – Chancellor College, Zomba, Malawi. You can choose however you would want to take part in this endeavour but the goal is to get the books into Chancellor College. The choice is yours – You can dip into your pockets to contribute to the shipping costs. Through your connections, you can engage folks at Chancellor College or its Computer Science Department to facilitate the shipping through whatever means they have. You can engage UNIMA office or some NGOs or any entities that can help get the books to the destination. Or you can call on that transporter friend of yours whose trucks travel between Malawi and Johannesburg to donate a corner for about 17 boxes of books on one of their trips.

If you are up for this action, please submit your pledge with all your contact details as a comment on this post or email your pledge and details to hnyeka@gmail.com

“The collecting has been done; together let us take these books home”.

Together we can do a lot …. as the journey continues.

We can DO IT!
